Tequila Corazón

Hello guys Toni B here and I picked this up recently and thought it was an interesting concept. Corazón is produced at Casa San Matías in Jalisco, one of the oldest tequila distilleries in Mexico dating back to 1886. This reposado is made from 100% blue Weber agave and aged in American oak, with some releases using ex-Buffalo Trace bourbon barrels which gives it a bit of crossover appeal for whiskey drinkers.

On the nose I get cooked agave, vanilla, light caramel and soft oak. It’s pretty inviting and slightly sweet but still keeps some classic tequila character.

On the palate it starts with sweet agave and honey, then moves into light toffee, caramel and some baking spice. You can definitely notice a little bourbon barrel influence, though it doesn’t overpower the agave. There’s also a touch of pepper on the finish that gives it a bit of balance.

The finish is medium with lingering agave sweetness and mild oak.

Overall I think it’s a solid and approachable reposado that bourbon fans will probably enjoy. It’s not the most complex reposado out there, but for the price range it’s a nice easy sipper.

Personally I’d take this over something like Patrón or Jose Cuervo in this price range. It just feels a bit more interesting with the barrel influence and agave character. That said, I don’t think it reaches the level of some of the bigger names like El Tesoro, Tequila Ocho, G4, or Fortaleza which tend to show more agave character and complexity.
